We are working on putting the local ecology and conservation groups and projects on the map. The map is not precise, but more to give a general idea of what groups are in the area. Red outlines are for trappers, blue for groups focused on water quality, green for planting/weeding, and orange for mixed groups.

Area Groups and Projects
Algies Bay Resident and Ratepayers Association
"Algies Bay Resident and Ratepayers Association has been functioning for many years and has built a solid reputation and forged a strong relationship with Auckland Council, Local Rodney Board, and other statutory bodies. These relationships have provided the opportunity for considerable improvements to our bay such as replacement seawalls, upgraded main reserve and carparking. Also, the children’s playground was upgraded and attracts children from our community as well as visitors."

Donkeys at Highfield
“Donkeys Inc” (formally, the Highfield Donkeys Incorporated Society and Highfield Garden Reserve Advisory Committee ) looks after the donkeys and their environment, with help from local volunteers and donations and in partnership with the Highfield Reserve Advisory Committee and Auckland Council. **Read More goes to their facebook page.

Forest and Bird Warkworth
Forest and Bird Warkworth is the local branch of the national Forest and Bird organisation. Our local branch proudly supports many local projects, helping to get new initiatives off the ground, fostering existing projects to help them succeed, and generally assisting with activities that contribute to the health of te taiao.

Friends of Awa Matakanakana (FOAM)
FOAM’s principal aim is the restoration and maintenance of a healthy Sandspit Estuary and the two rivers that feed into it, Matakana River (14.2 km long) and Glen Eden River (13.8 km long).

Leigh Harbour Valley Society
Leigh Harbour Valley Society is a local group of concerned landowners who work together to restore the coastal bush and walkways.

Leigh Penguin Project
To further help the little blue penguins, the Leigh Penguin project began trapping alongside the coast to target rats, stoats, weasels and possums. Numerous volunteers regularly check traplines and so far over 1000 predators have been removed.

Mahu West Pest
Mahurangi West Pest Group began as a pest control work group focused on controlling invasive plant and animal species.

Mahurangi College
In 2018 Mahurangi College began a pest monitoring and trapping program working alongside Auckland Council, in the bush surrounding our school and river Mahurangi College takes a multi-pronged approach in enhancing student learning around concepts associated with Kaitiakitanga (our-place) including ecosystem restoration, pest-animal and pest-plant control.

Mahurangi East Land Restoration (MELR)
Mahurangi East Land Restoration (MELR) aims to reduce sediment in the Mahurangi River Catchment.

Mahurangi East Resident and Ratepayers
Mahurangi East Resident and Ratepayers (MERRA) have a vision of a Pest Free Mahurangi. They have been carrying out pest animal control at Mahurangi East settlement and would like to work with others to reduce plant and animal pests.

Mahurangi River Restoration Trust
Mahurangi River Restoration Trust have the vision to restore the Mahurangi River to full health.

Ōmaha Beach Community
Ōmaha Beach Community Trappers buffer the coastal areas undertaking predator control in urban areas with a vision for Ōmaha to become predator-free.

PestFree Leigh

Pest Free Matakana is a newly established community group establishing trap lines around Matakana and Matakanakana River.

PestFree Snells
Snells Beach group working towards a sustainable predator free environment.

Pākiri Community Landcare
Our small community at Pākiri facilitate the community and local school with planting projects, working with Trees That Count, Waicare and Trees for Survival programme. Our aim is to create a native forest corridor from the coast, Pakiri regional park and Pakiri river.

Puhoi Landcare Group
The Puhoi Landcare Group developed out of a recognition for a local body to encourage greater pest management within the Puhoi area. To halt the decline and enhance the indigenous biodiversity of the Puhoi area.

Puhoi Trappers
An online group for Puhoi trappers to share success, tips, and tricks, ask questions, and get support from other like-minded trappers.

Rainbows End and Rivers Environmental Group
Rainbows End and Rivers Environmental Group Inc are made up of Rainbows End and Green Road residents who value and appreciate the environment they live in.

Sandspit Residents and Ratepayers Association
Our Organisation’s objectives are to protect and enhance the natural ecosystem and amenities of our vibrant Sandspit Community. As part of those objectives, we have very active Landcare volunteer groups committed to predator & weed control and to supporting Community involvement and education across a range of environmental initiatives.

Sandspit Road Project
Sandspit Road Project is a group of 4 landowners covering about 400ha using a combination of pest control measures.

Snells Conservation
Snells Conservation works to improve outcomes for the threatened shoreline ecosystems.
These are critical to the survival of native flora and fauna (especially birds and sea life), and the community’s enjoyment of the shoreline.

Takatu Landcare
Target species include Rats, Mustelids, and Possums. We also catch hedgehogs and mice in our traps.

Tamahunga Trappers
The Tamahunga Trappers carry out pest control within the Tamahunga forest in order to enhance biodiversity successes for native species currently present, as well as future self-introductions and translocations.
