Mahurangi River Restoration Trust have the vision to restore the Mahurangi River to full health. They are working alongside the council and iwi and are specifically focused on, and have funding to, remove silt from the river over the next three years.
The Mahurangi River is dying. Silt is smothering everything in the river and harbour, upsetting the ecological balance, slowly suffocating the aquaculture industry and creating an eyesore in the town. The Solution is to clear 115,000 cubic meters of sediment from the river. Over 3 years the silt will be removed along the length of the river creating a 15-meter-wide navigable channel plus cleaning out the town basin.
